About Our Work

Mopane USA Inc. / About Our Work

01Who We Are

We are a US non-profit/public charity – 501(c)(3), working to alleviate childhood poverty through education and health interventions. We work with our sister organization Mopane Foundation International based in the United Kingdom to support underprivileged children and communities in Zimbabwe.

The name “Mopane” refers to a drought resistant tree found in South Western Zimbabwe. This tree is highly resilient, blossoming in all seasons including winter. The Mopane Tree can adapt to its environment and outgrow most of the trees in its surroundings showing endurance and continuity. The Mopane Tree also provides food and shelter to animals and people; the leaves are edible to both domestic and wild animals and in summer seasons the Mopane Worms- a staple delicacy and a source of vitamins flourish. This organization intends to follow these qualities and not only grow, but leave a legacy that will continue to support children for generations.

Mopane Foundation International was formed in the UK in 2015 and began working in Zimbabwe to support education in rural communities. In 2021 a group of supporters based in the USA came together to formally organize Mopane USA as a way to further the mission and open the opportunity to support this critical work to others in North America and worldwide.

03Childhood Poverty

Some saddening facts about childhood poverty around the world:

  • About 50% of children living in extreme poverty live in Sub-Saharan African Countries.
  • Income inequality is very high in Sub Saharan Africa and out of the 10 most unequal countries, 7 of them are found in Africa. Source: Children.org
  • In Zimbabwe, over 65% of children live in poverty without access to education, nutrition, water, and sanitation according to UNICEF. 72% of children live in even more vulnerable and poorer conditions in rural and peri-urban areas hence Mopane’s focus with rural children.
